What is Trauma Informed Therapy
Trauma-informed therapy is not about a specific intervention but rather a type of therapy that acknowledges the impact that trauma has on clients’ behavior, mental health, and ability to engage in therapy. The therapist views their clients in the context of the individual’s traumatic experience(s), triggers and specific needs considering emotions and behavior. It also recognizes how people with different backgrounds may have experienced different types of traumas including racial trauma, intergenerational trauma, and how this impacts their recovery process.
The goal of trauma-informed therapy is to empower clients by educating them about their options and giving them an active role in their care.
